Who needs a gun? How about old people

It is often regurgitated by the gun grabbing zealots that firearms are just an unnecessary holdover from our country’s founding.  That the 2nd Amendment is some anachronism that should be purged from the modern era and relegated to the pages of history. Even if we set aside the understanding that the 2nd Amendment is included in the BIll of Rights as one of the pillars of our liberty in order to defend against tyranny, the need for firearms is ever present. Why?  Because bad people exist in the world.  And those bad people prey upon those who are weaker than they.  Sometimes these cowardly curs join with others like them to form packs. And with size and numbers these bottom feeding scumbags have little fear of the unarmed person they will victimize. Unarmed people like 88 year old Delbert Belton of Spokane Washington who was  robbed and beaten to...

Being Gay trumps being a Gun Owner in New Mexico

The Supreme Court of New Mexico has ruled that, by refusing to photograph a gay wedding, a photography studio violated the law. Long story short, private business owners, Jonathan and Elaine Huguenin don’t agree with gay marriage and chose not to provide photography services to a lesbian couple. According to the New Mexico Supreme Court, the case “teaches that at some point in our lives all of us must compromise, if only a little, to accommodate the contrasting values of others. A multicultural, pluralistic society, one of our nation’s strengths, demands no less.” Compromise.  Funny, this doesn’t seem like a compromise but rather forcing a someone to do something they are diametrically opposed to. The court goes on to say: The owners of Elane Photography, Jonathan and Elaine Huguenin, “are free to think, to say, to believe, as they wish, yet in the world of the marketplace, of commerce, of public accommodation, the...

Anti-gun cities, where the rich pay for protection while the poor pay with their lives

The story in New York City is one often told.  While about 8 million souls reside in the city only a scant proportion  (.00375%) are allowed to carry a gun for their own protection.  And with the steep, non-refundable application fee many people just cannot afford to even try for the likelihood of getting turned down and losing nearly $500. But the rich, famous, and connected have no issues footing that bill and getting a CCW issued to them.  Yet for every Jon Lennon there are THOUSANDS of John Q Publics murdered because they have had their constitutional rights denied them,  not to mention the tens of thousands raped, robbed or beaten. Even if the privileged few didn’t feel like getting a gun and CCW, like say hypocrite Rosie O’Donnell, you can just pay armed guards to protect you and your family. It’s a nice option, but one the...

Bulletproof objects are only a half-measure at best

If someone was coming at you with a sword would it be better for you to have a sword or a shield? The answer is the sword.  Why?  Because the sword can be used for both offense and defense to a greater degree than a shield can be. The same goes with the choice between a sword and hiding behind something.  While hiding may avoid the man with the sword it will ultimately be useless if you are found. Of course, in this modern era the need to defend yourself from sword wielding ninjas and brigands is dramatically less than in times gone by, yet the rationale behind the need for an offensive weapon for defensive actions is still as true today as it was in the way back when. Though in some places, like the University of Maryland, the thought is that giving the faculty bulletproof white boards...

The Disenfranchisement of the American Gun Owner

Unbeknownst to me as an American, showing ID in order to exercise a right is apparently unconstitutional.  I say unbeknownst because as a gun owner it seems like I’m forced to show ID all the time to exercise my rights. Yet, for the THIRD time, the courts have ruled in Pennsylvania that the voter ID law that would require a voter to prove they were who they said they were before they could cast a ballot, has been blocked. Apparently, according to the judge and those seeking to abolish the voter ID law, requiring identification somehow is racist, ageist, and a plot to disenfranchise voters.  All it takes is a little bit of time to get a FREE identification card and then you would be able to vote easy peasy, somehow that is too great a burden to bear. According to those who oppose voter ID laws, the young...

When gun control “logic” seeps into other aspects of life

See if this sounds familiar; an individual does something stupid or illegal with a gun that is not representative of responsible, law abiding gun owners in general.  A knee jerk reaction by a skittish “we need to act” political body forces some nonsensical, worthless and ultimately pointless gun control legislation that does nothing more than infringe and harass people who would never abuse their right in the first place. Welcome to New York.  Not too surprising that this knee jerk, micromanaging, Big Brother-esque nanny state mentality with gun control colors other aspects of the lives of its denizens. Case in point, right outside of Albany is Green Island, NY.  Green Island, following the lead of the controllers at the Capitol decided to deal with a persons ability to have pets. Because of a single person who happened to have 10 pets in one apartment (though no mention as to...

Who loves loopholes when they help HIM? …Obama

Talk about a guy who loves loopholes.  Well, I guess he only loves loopholes when he can exploit them. While President Obama has droned on ad nauseum about the so called “gun show loophole” and the internet gun sales loophole and anything else he doesn’t like about the 2nd Amendment calling it a loophole, he doesn’t seem to have an issue exploiting a loophole of his own. No, I’m not talking about how Obama declared that the Individual Mandate of Obamacare wasn’t a tax but is only Constitutional as one. No, there is one loophole that has come up rather recently that the Obama administration has jumped feet first into and ironically enough it has everything to do with guns and revolution. While Obama doesn’t believe that US Citizens have the right to keep and bear arms in order to defend themselves against tyranny, he has no problem whatsoever about Muslim...

Surprising exemption in Illinois for out of state CCW holders

As you may know, Illinois was the final holdout of states that officially barred its citizens the right to keep and bear arms.  With the recent override of Gov. Quinn’s veto last month, Illinois has finally shed the biggest hurdle of its unconstitutional ways and now allows concealed carry. While there are some hoops that must still be jumped through for the people of Illinois in order to get their CCW (16 hour class, still need a FOID card) Illinois has leapt ahead of other anti-rights states, such as New York and Hawaii, by becoming a shall issue state. If you are not barred by law then the issuing authority MUST give you a CCW.  In states like Hawaii, New York and California some areas are a de facto no-issue area because discretion is given to the issuing authority and if they hate the 2nd Amendment then you’re going...

If you don’t practice gun safety…don’t teach gun safety

Earlier this week an instructor for a gun safety class in Lancaster Ohio shot one of his students by “accident”.  I quoted accident because while 73 year old instructor Terry Dunlop Sr. didn’t intend to shoot 26 yr old Michael Piemonte, yet it wasn’t an accident…it was negligence. If you are teaching a class on gun safety you should adhere to what you teach and first and foremost in that is this: Treat all guns as if they are loaded. While Dunlop has not commented on his negligence Piemonte states that it appeared that Dunlap did not know that the gun was loaded. These are how tragedies happen. For any gun owner, such an oversight must not be taken lightly but for those who are given the responsibility to TEACH others how to be safe it is down right intolerable.   Fortunately Piemonte took the round in the arm after...

Federal Judge ruled Stop & Frisk unconstitutional. Time for a 2nd look at Terry Stops?

New York Despot Michael Bloomberg has taken his virulent hatred of firearms beyond just infringing on the 2nd Amendment rights of his citizens and promoted a program that denies New Yorkers their 4th Amendment rights. This program is colloquially known as “Stop and Frisk”.  Stop and Frisk gives NYPD officers the ability to stop an individual on a whim and search him.  Now, a lot of people complain that it is unfairly targeting black people.  I complain that it is unfairly targeting ANYONE. The practice has increased 600% since Bloomberg took office. Stop and Frisk by the numbers Stop and Frisk basically lowers the amount of reasonable articulable suspicion needed for an officer to engage in a stop.  In fact, looking over the “justifications” on the official police form, reasonable seems to have taken a hike.   Fits description?  Funny how many innocent people fit someones description about something....

Insurance for having to use your gun? Ludicrous…but maybe not ridiculous

The idea that law abiding gun owners would need insurance to cover the costs of legally using their firearms is ludicrous. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it is unnecessary. What do I mean?  One need look no further than the George Zimmerman self defense trial.  Zimmerman gets jumped by a gay-bashing homophobe and pummeled into the sidewalk.  He shoots his attacker to save his own life in a clear case of self defense, yet due to political pressure and the complete absconding of fairness is charged with both a crime AND $500,000 (before lawyer fees) in order to defend himself. I wish that were the only case in which a gun owner, acting responsibly in defense of their own life was being railroaded by malicious prosecution due to anti gun sentiment or political pressure, but it’s not. In case you haven’t read here about Sung-Ho Hwang, the President-elect of the...

Kahr Firearms Tells Orange County NY to Suck Lemons

Kahr Firearms Group were in the final stages of finalizing a deal to open up a factory in Orange County New York which would have brought much needed jobs to the area.  Then, Governor Cuomo and his backers in the legislature decided to gut New Yorkers right to keep and bear arms. As a result, Kahr will be moving its Corporate Office across the border to the friendlier political climes of Pennsylvania at the end of the year. They will also be building their new factory in Pike County PA. The spokesman for Kahr didn’t try to sidestep the reasons why they were making the move either.  He put the reason that New York was losing these jobs squarely on the passage of the ridiculously named SAFE Act that Cuomo rammed through the Assembly before anyone could object. Frank Harris, Kahr’s vice president for sales and marketing: “We’re looking for...

Elysium: The Gun Hypocrisy of Hollywood continues

Hollywood leans left…no kidding.  My issue with the most vocal Hollywood stars is not that they are liberals or even anti gun per se, it is the wanton hypocrisy in which they conduct themselves that really gets to me. The latest example is from gun hater Matt Damon.  Besides being a staunch supporter of President Obama and gun control in general, Damon goes so far as to say (in an interview with The Sunday Herald), “I actually hate guns, they freak me out”. Hmmm…interesting, because when you were Jason Bourne making millions off the franchise you didn’t have a problem with the hero of the movie using firearms in order to protect his life and freedom. But that was a few years ago…what about now.  Well, with his new movie, “Elysium”, Matt Damon decides to dedicate an entire movie to shoving his face so full of cake it would...

Gun Co.: Should they stay or should they go now?

As a gun owner, I have always found it ironic that some of the most prominent names in firearms are located in the most restrictive gun-unfriendly states in the Union. Colt (CT), Springfield (MA), Henry (NJ), Kimber(NY), Smith and Wesson (MA) are all located in hypocrisy states.  I call them hypocrisy states because while the State Legislatures and Governors enjoy the jobs and tax that gun companies in their state provide, they still pass laws that make the wares being built illegal to sell in that state. With the recent surge in support for the right to keep and bear arms by a majority of Americans (who are buying firearms in record numbers) meeting the knee jerk reactionary “do something now” thinking of politicians, these firearm companies are finding themselves with a quandary. Should they stay in their states like a abused wife whose husband doesn’t love but still...

But…I thought you CONTROLLED the guns in NYC, Mayor Bloomberg

Mayor Bloomberg does say he’s after ILLEGAL guns right? Hmmm…interesting, because all the laws on the books that strip New Yorkers of their god given right to keep and bear arms didn’t stop 14 year old Shaaliver Douse from walking up to a group at 3am and open fire. From surveillance videos of Sunday evening, Douse, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, fires at a group of men standing outside a bodega and then chases after one of them. Douse fired four shots in all. Douse’s shooting spree ended rather abruptly when Police showed up  and shot him in the face. Fortunately, no innocent bystanders were hurt in gunfire. Now, Bloomberg will probably blame some other state for lax gun laws, but that doesn’t really hold water here.  No state in the union allows for a 14 year old boy to buy a handgun legally.  Plus, how is this 14...

Attempted Mass Murder Proves It’s Time For California To Ban “Assault” Vehicles

In another example of California’s wanton disregard for the safety of its citizens, the permissible culture of Sacramento allows anyone to buy an “assault” vehicle without passing a background check. Oh sure, if they buy this killing machine on four wheels from a Licensed dealer then they may have to undergo a little credit check and the dealer will keep a record of the transaction…but what about the USED CAR LOOPHOLE!?!?!?! The state of California, due to the Lobbying Power of the Big Three auto companies has turned a blind eye to this danger and it has proven costly. On Saturday, August 3rd in Los Angeles, attempted serial killer Nathan Louis Campbell parked his “assault” vehicle outside a hotel and picked out his targets on the Venice Beach boardwalk. On the surveillance video, Campbell got into a large black car, steered around a vehicle barrier and accelerated mercilessly through the...

The ballistics of SHARK WEEK

In celebration of Shark Week, I thought I would take a look at the ballistic reality of finding yourself in a Jaws like scenario and having to shoot your way out of it. First of all I understand how ridiculous the notion of a realistic “Jaws like scenario” is, so I don’t mean a giant shark is eating your boat and its drunken captain.  But hey, maybe you’re on a boat and some friends are swimming and the dorsal fin comes and makes like its hungry. Have you ever heard that sharks are bulletproof? Bulletproof might be a bit of a stretch, but they are definitely bullet resistant because they come with their own body armor in the form of…well…their body. Sharks are entirely covered by placoid scales, also called dermal denticles.  These scales are structurally homologous with vertebrate teeth (“denticle” translates to “small tooth”), having a central pulp cavity supplied with blood vessels, surrounded by a conical layer of dentine,...

The do as I say not as I do government in action

With all the moral authority of an adulterer opining on why other people should respect their wedding vows, IRS Chief Dan Werfel has stated that he doesn’t want Obamacare but has no problem forcing the American public to get it. As it stands now, Government employees (including Congress and the President)  are exempted from Obamacare.  So while John Q Public has to face the onerous task of being forced to change their healthcare choices, the employees of the government simply say, “eh…no thanks.” This got me thinking of “Two America’s”.  Though it is often overlooked by the media there is definitely two Americs’s when it comes to the laws that the average citizen has to follow and those that those in government can ignore. Recently in New York, with the ridiculously named SAFE Act, Gov. Cuomo signed a bill that exempts not only law enforcement from owning “assault” rifles...
