The Government is “shutdown”…what about NICS?

I read a funny tweet today, day one of the government shutdown. https://twitter.com/PoliticalLaughs/status/385050028324044800 While that seems oddly accurate there are things that regular people may require of the government. For instance, the NICS background check system.  Will this be operational while the government is “shutdown”?  I put shutdown in quotes because of all the people who get furloughed, guess who STILL gets paid…yep…CONGRESS and the President. But I digress, will American citizens be allowed to purchase firearms that require a NICS check or has the government once again finagled their way into infringing the rights of law abiding citizens? The answer is rather simple. The Federal Bureau of Investigation runs the NICS system out of  the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia.  Oh yeah, the FBI is still funded during the “shutdown”.  And as the FBI notes on their own website, “NICS is available 17...

How the Kenyan Mall Massacre Can Easily Happen in the US…Thanks Gun Control

Last week Islamic Terrorists stormed the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya killing at least 68 people.  Four days later, the armed men have continued to hold off police attempts to retake the mall. These terrorists executed anyone who wasn’t a muslim or couldn’t answer questions about Islam such as what Muhammed’s mother’s name was or couldn’t recite passages from the Koran. The first thing I could think of is how easily that could happen here.  The second was how did it happened in Kenya in the first place? The answer is the fallacy of gun control. A quick run down of gun control measures in Kenya: The Washington DC National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence categorizes the regulation of guns in Kenya as restrictive. The right to private gun ownership is not guaranteed by law Civilians are not allowed to possess semi-automatic self-loading military assault rifles...

Do Open Carriers ruin it for us all?

I have found in the years I have been involved in the firearms and 2nd Amendment community that often times gun owners are their own worst enemy. From that statement you might assume that I mean open carriers metaphorically shoot themselves in the foot because they make waves.  Unless you are an open carrier, then you might assume that I mean that close minded concealed carry only folk are causing a fracture in the firearms community. It should be no surprise to those who subscribe to this site and those who know me personally where I fall in the OC vs CC debate.  Back in July I penned an article entitled:  Open Carry Should Not Only Be Legal, But Encouraged. Of course, open carrying is back in the news because Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz recently came out saying that guns are no longer welcome at the coffee shops.  The...

THIS is how the Federal Government will get a National Gun Registry

With steady wins and progress, the 2nd Amendment has been sludging through the mire of gun control muck to strengthen itself in most states.  On the federal level, Obama and his gun control cadre do not have the juice to push for hard, gun rights-infringing legislation. So they have decided to attack privacy in more general terms, so they can worm their way into achieving one of their biggest goals and one of the most dire threats to the 2nd Amendment; a National Gun Registry. But as I said, the 2nd Amendment pro gun movement has been kicking ass and taking names lately so how exactly is Obama and his gun grabbing groupies planning on doing this?  Well, they certainly aren’t going to say the word “Gun” or “Registry”.  They are going to say “Credit Card”. Ever hear of the Consumer Financial Protection Board? Sounds like a innocuous and...

Is it me or are Gun Controllers becoming more cartoonish the more they lose?

Remember those old Wile E Coyote and Road Runner cartoons?  The Road Runner would be flying around, enjoying his freedom with the liberty that his speed gave him while Wile E Coyote would try and stop him with convoluted and illogical contraptions and plans. I cannot help but draw a comparison to gun controllers who, especially after losing, come up with some of the most asinine explanations for the loss as well as further propagating the idea that the next giant slingshot or rocket powered roller skates are going to work. Recently, with the loss of 2 gun control state senators, Giron and Morse, anti-liberty governor Hickenloper came out with this gem: “Politics revolves around certain issues how people talk about them and how people’s emotions respond to them and often perceived reality more important than the facts” I’m sorry, but didn’t this whole thing came about because, like...

9/11/13 : Twelve years of letting the terrorists win

I’m going to sidestep the normal gun heavy discussion I tend to have and focus on my Libertarian roots. I cannot help but look at the past twelve years and see all that we lost.  Starting with the 2700+ killed in New York, the 343 fire fighters who died in the line of duty, those in the pentagon and those in the plane that struck it. Then I think of Flight 93 and the heroes on board.  The first and the last victory the people of this country had against the war on terror. Because everything afterward has been a continued and steady victory for terrorism. See, when terrorists commit to something, dying is pretty much a moot point.  Therefore killing them doesn’t actually change the scoreboard.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for killing terrorists, but that is just a show to cover the continuing defeats that we...

Colorado recall: Is you or is you ain’t my constituency?

UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM First, let me say that I am excited about the Colorado recall election today.  I love to see representative democracy at work.  The kind that exists in a Republic in which those elected are held accountable to those they represent. Furthermore, despite the lawsuits and strong arm tactics that those who are subject to the recall tried to put forth in order to deny democracy it’s due, liberty will have her day. But with all the hoopla and hyperbole on this election, one might miss what is actually on the line with today’s election. The answer is: a small pebble. Huh?!?! Allow me to elaborate. If the recall succeeds then tangibly, two anti gun sitting members of the Colorado general assembly get replaced by vocally pro gun candidates. That’s about the extent of it.  The General assembly doesn’t change majority, there is no immediate revocation...

You shouldn’t have to ask permission for digging a hole in your yard or owning a gun

The 2nd Amendment doesn’t grant me the right to keep and bear arms. No, really, not being sarcastic. The fact that I am living, endowed with inalienable rights by my creator, of which is the right to defend myself against harm and tyranny is what gives me the right to keep and bear arms. The 2nd Amendment only states that truth and tells the government that they are not allowed to infringe upon that truth. Not like the government listens all the time. Regardless, you shouldn’t have to ask the governments permission to exercise a right that you have by natural law. With thinking about all these inalienable rights I can’t help but remember the first draft of the Declaration of Independence used John Locke’s phrase “Life, Liberty and Property”.  I guess it is more poetic to say “pursuit of happiness”. But do we own our property?  Or really,...

Gun owners act with class…the hateful left acts with crass

Depending on where you live, the chances are you have come across those who disagree with your choice to exercise your right to keep and bear arms.  There is also a chance you have found businesses that do not recognize your 2nd Amendment rights. There are plenty of those of the “tolerant” left who have causes they believe in as well. The difference between in how gun owners react to rejection and the way those of the hateful left is quite telling. If a business is anti-gun, we as gun owners will most likely avoid it in order to support another company that believes in the 2nd Amendment.  We’ll let others in our community know that a certain business is anti-gun and may even reach out to that business to let them know that they are losing business but it doesn’t extend further than that. Then you have the...

Rocky Mountain Showdown, T-Minus 1 week

It’s not often that September brings election day excitement like that found currently in Colorado.  With the recall election of two anti-liberty state senators, the stage is set for an election on September 10th that will reverberate throughout the country. What is at stake for both Colorado and the rest of the country? The very fundamental basis of representative governance.  In that, are elected officials free to disregard the will of their constituency and pass unconstitutional laws that restrict the rights of said constituency? A lot of people say that is what we have elections for, but what if actions are so egregious, or the governance is so inept and damaging that waiting for terms to end may cause irrevocable harm? This is what the ability to recall is meant for.  And shame on those who find themselves on the wrong side of recalls who say otherwise. People like...

Happy Labor day…no, not you unions…but to those who labor

First and foremost, if you find yourself with a job during this Obama driven economic malaise, congratulations. Secondly, the idea of Labor day to celebrate Unions bothers me.  Perhaps that stems from my dealings with being FORCED to join a union and in doing so having the amount of money I was paid limited since excellence cannot be rewarded.  That always struck me as un-American.  And the fact that the MLB Players union has all but destroyed the game a time or two doesn’t help either. But I digress. As the majority of Americans celebrate Labor by ironically not working, I would like to take a moment to thank those around the world who labor in order to maintain our way of life. No, i’m not talking about pre-teen sweat shop workers in China who make your Nike’s or the peasant farmhands who grow exotic fruits. I’m talking about...

This holiday weekend, hit the shooting range and patron pro gun businesses…here’s how.

If, like many Americans you find yourself on a long weekend, be it near home or on a trip, here are 2 sites that you might want to consult in order to maximize your enjoyment this holiday. For anyone who shoots on a regular basis you probably know where all the ranges are near your house.  But what about when you are visiting family or friends, or just out of town on vacation? Well, if you are in need of finding a range to squeeze off some rounds look no further than wheretoshoot.org This site gives you a list of ranges that you can easily find either by state or zip code.  The site even breaks down the ranges by what they offer and provide, such as Archery, handgun, rifle, retail, rental, women or youth programs etc. Not only that, if you have a range that you like and...

Spokane Police Chief Straub prefers you just roll over and take it

In a story that enraged me so much I took a night to calm down so this article wouldn’t be laced with f-bombs and other expletives, Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub blames 88 year old WWII vet Delbert Belton for his own death. How did this octogenarian cause his own death?  Did he hurl racist comments at two black teens?  Did he follow them around and make them uncomfortable?  Did he start the fight and/or threaten the thugs? No.  According to Chief Straub, Delbert Belton caused his own death because he had the audacity to fight back when he was being robbed.  Straub basically is letting the two killers off the hook because they really just wanted to do a quick robbery but that uppity old guy just had to make trouble. No…seriously.  In Straub’s own words: “Our information is that the individual (Belton) fought back and that may...

Bloomberg…dude…when no one shows up perhaps 90% just ain’t so

Bloomberg’s dog and pony show, aka No More Names Bus Tour, has a bit of a logistical problem.  No one is showing up. In case you haven’t heard of this bus tour, it is a bus with a bunch of names of people killed by firearms that Bloomberg says he is honoring (like the Boston Marathon Bomber) and the gun ctonrollers drive across the country and try to hold rallies to push their agenda. The funny part is that in order not to be overwhelmed by people who believe in liberty and freedom the bus tour doesn’t actually announce publicly where it is going to be.  It just kind of shows up and hopes that the magical “90%” of Americans who agree with them will show up. What they get is more like this: Atlanta Des Moines Minneapolis Chester PA Missoula, MT (the above picture isn’t of her alone...

Who needs a gun? How about old people

It is often regurgitated by the gun grabbing zealots that firearms are just an unnecessary holdover from our country’s founding.  That the 2nd Amendment is some anachronism that should be purged from the modern era and relegated to the pages of history. Even if we set aside the understanding that the 2nd Amendment is included in the BIll of Rights as one of the pillars of our liberty in order to defend against tyranny, the need for firearms is ever present. Why?  Because bad people exist in the world.  And those bad people prey upon those who are weaker than they.  Sometimes these cowardly curs join with others like them to form packs. And with size and numbers these bottom feeding scumbags have little fear of the unarmed person they will victimize. Unarmed people like 88 year old Delbert Belton of Spokane Washington who was  robbed and beaten to...

Being Gay trumps being a Gun Owner in New Mexico

The Supreme Court of New Mexico has ruled that, by refusing to photograph a gay wedding, a photography studio violated the law. Long story short, private business owners, Jonathan and Elaine Huguenin don’t agree with gay marriage and chose not to provide photography services to a lesbian couple. According to the New Mexico Supreme Court, the case “teaches that at some point in our lives all of us must compromise, if only a little, to accommodate the contrasting values of others. A multicultural, pluralistic society, one of our nation’s strengths, demands no less.” Compromise.  Funny, this doesn’t seem like a compromise but rather forcing a someone to do something they are diametrically opposed to. The court goes on to say: The owners of Elane Photography, Jonathan and Elaine Huguenin, “are free to think, to say, to believe, as they wish, yet in the world of the marketplace, of commerce, of public accommodation, the...

The Disenfranchisement of the American Gun Owner

Unbeknownst to me as an American, showing ID in order to exercise a right is apparently unconstitutional.  I say unbeknownst because as a gun owner it seems like I’m forced to show ID all the time to exercise my rights. Yet, for the THIRD time, the courts have ruled in Pennsylvania that the voter ID law that would require a voter to prove they were who they said they were before they could cast a ballot, has been blocked. Apparently, according to the judge and those seeking to abolish the voter ID law, requiring identification somehow is racist, ageist, and a plot to disenfranchise voters.  All it takes is a little bit of time to get a FREE identification card and then you would be able to vote easy peasy, somehow that is too great a burden to bear. According to those who oppose voter ID laws, the young...

Kahr Firearms Tells Orange County NY to Suck Lemons

Kahr Firearms Group were in the final stages of finalizing a deal to open up a factory in Orange County New York which would have brought much needed jobs to the area.  Then, Governor Cuomo and his backers in the legislature decided to gut New Yorkers right to keep and bear arms. As a result, Kahr will be moving its Corporate Office across the border to the friendlier political climes of Pennsylvania at the end of the year. They will also be building their new factory in Pike County PA. The spokesman for Kahr didn’t try to sidestep the reasons why they were making the move either.  He put the reason that New York was losing these jobs squarely on the passage of the ridiculously named SAFE Act that Cuomo rammed through the Assembly before anyone could object. Frank Harris, Kahr’s vice president for sales and marketing: “We’re looking for...
