How not to be a jackass with a gun

Not knowing a gun is loaded is not an accident. It’s negligence. Engaging in a shouting match with some mouth breathing gun control zealot does not help anyone EXCEPT the gun control zealot.  The press will spin their drooling vitriol laced rage as being “passionate about protecting children” while spinning you, the gun owner, as a person on the brink of murder. The following video discusses a few things to keep in mind to avoid being a jackass with a gun. Enjoy.   It’s pretty simple folks.  Be safe and don’t lower yourself to the rambling idiocy of the opposition. Don’t provide ammo for them make caricatures of gun owners.   Related articles Hilarious: Pro-Gun Bill Named After Rabid Anti-Gun Fanatic Piers Morgan And He’s Not Too Happy About It Guns. Non-Gun Real World Example Of “Better To Have and Not Need Than Need and Not Have”

Gun control zealots are all about bemoaning the point that the chances of a person needing a gun are remote.  It may suprise many of my readers but I agree with them.  Fortunately the vast majority of gun owners will never have to use their firearm to protect themselves. But so too will a vast majority of homeowners not have their house burn down yet no one is suggesting that fire insurance is somehow only purchased by pyromaniacs. Do seat belts make people worse and more reckless of drivers? I can go on and on with this track of logic, logic of course being the bane of gun control.  And I could highlight gun owners who were raped or robbed or murdered because they were in a “gun free” zone (or non gun owners who never had a chance), then show comparative footage of gun owners who stopped such...

Iconic AK-47 Inventor Passes Away

I love America. I think we are pretty much the bees knees when it comes a lot of things But sometimes you’ve got to give a commie his due. The world lost a pioneer today, Mikhail Kalashnikov passed away today at the ripe old age of 94. His lasting legacy will be the firearm that bears his name, the  Avtomat Kalashnikova that he created in November of 1947; thereafter known colloquially as the AK-47. Despite being the poster child gun for gun controllers who wish to stamp out so called “assault rifles” the AK-47 is one of the most impressive rifles of the modern era. Compared it a M-16, which can be fickle in both weather and cleaning, the AK can be tossed in a mud pit, covered in sand, run over by a truck, left there over the winter and still be ready to fire when you pull the trigger. It...

Teach a child what is right and when they are old they will not stray from the lesson

What makes a tragedy truly tragic, is when it could have been easily avoided. But for the ignorance and stupidity of a 20 year old, a 16 year old hero lost her life in Indiana. Three years ago Aubrey Peters, at the age of 13, jumped into an icy reservoir and saved the lives of 2 small children. Yesterday she was shot in the chest and died, killed by a man who should have known better than to play with a gun as if it were a toy. 20 year old Jacob Travis McDaniel has been charged with 2 felonies, reckless homicide and pointing a firearm.  I personally hope he gets sentenced to the fullest extent of the law because even though he didn’t intend to shoot Aubrey his idiocy and ignorance cost a young girl her life. While Peters along with a group of friends were hanging out...

Be Wary, Be Ready, Be Armed.

With all the random acts of violence out there in the world, this holiday season brings two distinct things to two distinct groups.  To many it is a time of gladness and joy over the birth of Christ or the miracle of Hanukkah.  To others it is an opportunity to commit crime or acts of evil. I remember a quote attributed to a bank robber back in the day.  When asked by a reporter why he robbed banks the bank robber replied “because that’s where the money is”. So too, during our festive holiday buying fest, will those with evil intent find the things they desire; namely targets and opportunity.  For a mass shooter there really isn’t a better time or place than during holiday shopping at a mall to go off.  Most malls follow the inane policy of being “gun free zones”, they’re jam packed with people who...

Knockout players are rabid animals that need to be put down

The title clearly states my feelings toward the matter.  In case you aren’t aware of the “game” knockout, it basically consists of striking an unsuspecting person on the street and trying to quite literally knock them out in one punch. Man, woman or child, it does not matter to the reprobates and vile scumbags who engage in the activity. Not only is the act itself reprehensible and cowardly, the punch along with the immediate aftermath can be deadly. Below are a few incidents of the act captured on camera.  Be warned, it can be disturbing if you still consider the people who are doing this as people instead of animals.  I think about it in the same sense as watching “When Animals Attack” type shows, it makes it a little easier to digest. http://youtu.be/fIvyAfLooR0 The last one was filmed in Pittsburgh.  I remember that day, I was only a...

Unlike the methods of Ostriches and Gun Controllers, Alaskans teach children gun safety so to avoid tragedy

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Earlier this week, about 150 sixth graders headed to the firing range to learn about firearms.  Floyd Dryden Middle school runs a program that teaches any 6th grader in Juneau who wants to, how to safely handle and shoot rifles, as well as hunting ethics, conservation and management, navigation and other outdoor skills. But don’t misunderstand, just as the Second Amendment isn’t about hunting, neither is this program.  Program Director Ken Coate stresses: “We aren’t here to create little hunters. We’re here to teach firearm safety, firearm handling, how to treat a firearm with respect, how to keep a kid from getting in trouble with a firearm — and everything else is a side benefit.” Jesse Kiehl, who has been with the program for six years goes a little...

The 1911 .45…the Gun, the Myth, the Legend

In the past 100 plus years the 1911 handgun has grown to nigh Herculean proportions.  It has morphed into a dragon slaying, never failing, super powered Excalibur that knows no equal. I tend to agree. In service for over a century the pistol has withstood the test of time and is even seeing a resurgence in recent years as some units in both the military and law enforcement are leaving behind the Glocks and Berettas for the trusty 1911.  Example of these include Marine Corps Special Operations Command, LAPD SWAT, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, F.B.I. regional S.W.A.T. teams, and 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta (Delta Force). But what of the truly awe inspiring stories that have cemented the legend of the 1911? For those we look to war, for it is in wartime that the mythos of the 1911 has been fostered.  In the 75 years from 1918 to 1993, at least...

A few facts gun owners should keep in mind

There are a few factoids that gun owners should keep in mind.  These mental notes both remind gun owners of what is important and also are good conversation anecdotes to have with those who might not understand why gun ownership is such an important thing. Guns only have 2 enemies – rust and politicians. Gun effectiveness in regards to distance is on a bell curve.  If your target is too far your weapon is ineffective, too close and its effectiveness can be compromised The average response time of a 911 call is 13 minutes. The response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second. You can either shoot and be judged by your peers or not shoot and take your chances with the goodness of the criminal. God made all men, Sam Colt made all men equal.  That’s even more true when you include women. Center mass for...

Gun Tip of the Day: Aluminum Foil Kills Rust

I hate to say it but I let one of my handguns get a little too humid this summer and didn’t do the proper preventive maintenance on it.  So, after spending the summer locked in its case I recoiled in disgust when I saw that it was covered in some parts by surface rust. Not the kind of rust you can just wipe off mind you…the kind that sticks. Oddly enough, as I have been restoring a motorcycle recently I had acquired some fantastic rust dissolver that was chewing up and spitting out rust like ole-timey tobacco. Yet the problem with these rust dissolvers is that they are extremely potent.  The kind you need to wear rubber gloves with and will eat paint right down to the metal.  So they cannot be used on a place that you do not want to see the original metal. So with dissolver...

Sending heat rounds downrange with a bun in the oven

Got wind of a story from our friend at GirlsJustWannaHaveGuns.com, Regis Giles, about a young pregnant woman who used a handgun to shoot at and scare off two home invaders who busted down her door. “Alex” (named changed for safety) didn’t like the idea of her husband buying a gun and having one around the house.  Fortunately for her, her husband would not be swayed about protecting his family and he properly instructed her on how to use the sidearm. In her own words: [youtube=http://youtu.be/4pgwpYWPUEY?t=40s] A few funny things I take away from that, not funny haha mind you but funny hmmmm.  These burglars were in her home and 911 was on the phone.  Without that gun that she was so against when her husband bought it 7 months earlier this scenario ends differently.  As they say, when seconds count the police are minutes away.  I’m glad “Alex” came around...

This holiday weekend, hit the shooting range and patron pro gun businesses…here’s how.

If, like many Americans you find yourself on a long weekend, be it near home or on a trip, here are 2 sites that you might want to consult in order to maximize your enjoyment this holiday. For anyone who shoots on a regular basis you probably know where all the ranges are near your house.  But what about when you are visiting family or friends, or just out of town on vacation? Well, if you are in need of finding a range to squeeze off some rounds look no further than wheretoshoot.org This site gives you a list of ranges that you can easily find either by state or zip code.  The site even breaks down the ranges by what they offer and provide, such as Archery, handgun, rifle, retail, rental, women or youth programs etc. Not only that, if you have a range that you like and...

Who needs a gun? How about old people

It is often regurgitated by the gun grabbing zealots that firearms are just an unnecessary holdover from our country’s founding.  That the 2nd Amendment is some anachronism that should be purged from the modern era and relegated to the pages of history. Even if we set aside the understanding that the 2nd Amendment is included in the BIll of Rights as one of the pillars of our liberty in order to defend against tyranny, the need for firearms is ever present. Why?  Because bad people exist in the world.  And those bad people prey upon those who are weaker than they.  Sometimes these cowardly curs join with others like them to form packs. And with size and numbers these bottom feeding scumbags have little fear of the unarmed person they will victimize. Unarmed people like 88 year old Delbert Belton of Spokane Washington who was  robbed and beaten to...

If you don’t practice gun safety…don’t teach gun safety

Earlier this week an instructor for a gun safety class in Lancaster Ohio shot one of his students by “accident”.  I quoted accident because while 73 year old instructor Terry Dunlop Sr. didn’t intend to shoot 26 yr old Michael Piemonte, yet it wasn’t an accident…it was negligence. If you are teaching a class on gun safety you should adhere to what you teach and first and foremost in that is this: Treat all guns as if they are loaded. While Dunlop has not commented on his negligence Piemonte states that it appeared that Dunlap did not know that the gun was loaded. These are how tragedies happen. For any gun owner, such an oversight must not be taken lightly but for those who are given the responsibility to TEACH others how to be safe it is down right intolerable.   Fortunately Piemonte took the round in the arm after...

Insurance for having to use your gun? Ludicrous…but maybe not ridiculous

The idea that law abiding gun owners would need insurance to cover the costs of legally using their firearms is ludicrous. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it is unnecessary. What do I mean?  One need look no further than the George Zimmerman self defense trial.  Zimmerman gets jumped by a gay-bashing homophobe and pummeled into the sidewalk.  He shoots his attacker to save his own life in a clear case of self defense, yet due to political pressure and the complete absconding of fairness is charged with both a crime AND $500,000 (before lawyer fees) in order to defend himself. I wish that were the only case in which a gun owner, acting responsibly in defense of their own life was being railroaded by malicious prosecution due to anti gun sentiment or political pressure, but it’s not. In case you haven’t read here about Sung-Ho Hwang, the President-elect of the...

The ballistics of SHARK WEEK

In celebration of Shark Week, I thought I would take a look at the ballistic reality of finding yourself in a Jaws like scenario and having to shoot your way out of it. First of all I understand how ridiculous the notion of a realistic “Jaws like scenario” is, so I don’t mean a giant shark is eating your boat and its drunken captain.  But hey, maybe you’re on a boat and some friends are swimming and the dorsal fin comes and makes like its hungry. Have you ever heard that sharks are bulletproof? Bulletproof might be a bit of a stretch, but they are definitely bullet resistant because they come with their own body armor in the form of…well…their body. Sharks are entirely covered by placoid scales, also called dermal denticles.  These scales are structurally homologous with vertebrate teeth (“denticle” translates to “small tooth”), having a central pulp cavity supplied with blood vessels, surrounded by a conical layer of dentine,...

When does your gun collection become an “arsenal”? When the media wants to grab headlines

In the Little Havana district of Miami, Luis Bianchi was running late for work while waiting for his 3 year old daughter’s mother to come and take her.  He made the inadvisable choice to leave Analis in front of the television when her mother told Luis that she was on her way and would be there shortly.  Luis, blocked access to his bedroom with a couch (the reason will become apparent) and locked the front door when he left. Analis was found wandering the halls some time later and a neighbor called police at 6:30pm. When the police came and escorted the little girl back to her home they investigated the apartment, moved the couch and entered the fathers bedroom to find…AN ARSENAL OF AMMUNITION AND ASSAULT RIFLES….oooooo scary. Almost every news outlet and paper included the word arsenal.  Most even went on to say the house had a...

The false safety blanket of a home security unit

Now, don’t get me wrong, a home security unit like ADT is a great little additional line of protection, especially while you are out of the house. But ADT has taken to selling a false bill of goods with this ad: http://ispot.tv/a/7LzI (sorry it doesn’t embed) But in the first 5 seconds the scene shows a woman and her daughter walking into their house while the burglar is ransacking the place.  Her voiceover tells the audience that the reason they got ADT is because she walked into a burglary once. While that is all well and good, in the acted scene, the burglar looks at this woman and simply turns and saunters off.  Maybe that really happens in real life, or maybe this guy turns to her and her daughter and silences them, or does something much much worse.  One would think that after walking in on a burglary that...
