With the passage of the freedom crushing SAFE Act, some have speculated that the politicians in Albany, made up heavily from downstate gun grabbers, have taken a bridge too far.
It was so sloppily thrown together and included banning police officers from using their firearms that it had to be altered in order to create two classes of citizens. Those who work for the states who still get to exercise the rights enumerated in the Constitution and the rest of the people, who are more like inconveniences to the body politic.
That’s just the way things go in the EMPIRE state.
Now other states who have faced this type of injustice, such as California, have spouted off about breaking up the state. Even Colorado and Maryland have been getting in on the state splitting action. But let’s set them aside for now because their split would change little and only create 2 of the smallest states in the nation.
California though, wants to split into 6 states. And having lived there for a short while a couple of years ago, I can easily see how that is not only reasonable but completely understandable as the people from the coast are radically different than the people of the foothills; SoCal a world apart from NorCal etc.
So too is Upstate New York radicaly different from Downstate New York which includes the city and Long Island.
Upstate New York is more reminiscent of central Pennsylvania than some oversized suburb of New York City…and if you visit this site often you know that is high praise I’m giving.
Now, for New York to split into two SHOULD be easy. There is a pretty clear line of demarcation between upstate and downstate, if you extend straight from the dog leg NY/Connecticut border it lines up near perfectly to where NY and NJ meet on the hudson.
Basically everything from White Plains South would be part of New York while everything North would be Upstate. Now, you might not think that seems like an equal split but in truth, that basically leaves both regions with about the same amount of people, approx 8 million apiece.
And the split is more than just freedom for upstaters from their gun hating, controller, city dwellers to the south, it is about economic freedom as well. Without the interference of posh psuedo intellectuals that have hampered the boon of fracking, upstate will be free to develop their own industry and prosper without being hamstrung by NYC.
So, will states like NY and Cali ever split?
NOT ON YOUR LIFE.
This is why: In order to be able to split your state asunder you need to get your legislature to agree to it. Then you need an Act of Congress.
Why won’t these things happen. Getting your own state to relinquish its power would be hard enough, but doable if you convince them how having more absolute power over their smaller piece is better, but convincing Congress? Barring some Maine Missouri Compromise in which a state like Texas has to split itself apart too, the Democrats in congress would NEVER even entertain the idea of splitting New York and California into pieces.
And the reason why is very simple. If they were to do so it would be 50 years before another Democrat was elected president.
You see, NY and Cali are not purple SWING States…they are SOLID Blue states when taken on a whole in regards to electing presidents. They total 84 electoral votes and you only need 270 to become President. The BEST case scenario for Democrats if the splits occurred would be to keep 15 NY votes and maybe 30 Cali votes. That is 45 votes instead of 84.
Sure, Obama won the last 2 elections by more than 39 votes, but strategy, campaigning and people’s sentiment about elections completely change when you take out the assured head start of 84 to 0 in favor of the Donkey.
It’s something Democrats would not consent to unless the Electoral College was tossed completely and that is unlikely to happen anytime soon either.
So, taking state splitting off the table, what can be done to ensure gun owners their rights in states that take a certain amount of pleasure in infringing upon freedom.
Not surprisingly it is a group of Upstate New Yorkers who have come up with a solution.
The Upstate Conservative Coalition has come up with a rather simple plan that both sides would logically benefit from.
Instead of officially splitting into two states, New York would split into 2 autonomous regions, New York consisting of NYC and surrounding areas including long Island and upstate which would be renamed New Amsterdam, it’s original name.
The state would remain in a sense, funded by the 3 percent sales tax, and would remain united for federal purposes such as the Electoral College and congressional seats. But the power on all state matters would be transferred to the regions. In this way an Act of Congress is unnecessary. While downstate pushes for their high taxes, gun control and general nanny state nonsense; Upstate is free to embrace guns, hydraulic fracture for oil and gas and basically enjoy the all around liberty and freedom that the downstaters seem to despise so much.
Don’t take this the wrong way, I don’t think that every little hamlet that disagrees with its current state government should just look for autonomy. Just imagine what that would do for pre-emption in gun control states.
But in some situations where states, mainly through time and geography have grown SO divergent that in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of Upstate New Yorkers and rural Californians.
They have the right and ought to be free and independent regions.
