Military Bases Are Gun Free Zones…Once Again, THAT’S The Problem

There is a common misconception among the civilian population that US Military bases are full of armed soldiers walking around ready at all times to repel attack.  On US soil, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth of the matter is that US Military bases are treated like gun control cities regardless of what state they happen to be in.  Soldiers on all military installations, including Fort Hood, are not armed while on post, nor are they permitted to carry any privately owned firearms. Only law enforcement and security personnel are allowed to have weapons on post.

From the Department of Defenses Regulations:

The authorization to carry firearms shall be issued only to qualified personnel when there is a reasonable expectation that life or DoD assets will be jeopardized if firearms are not carried. Evaluation of the necessity to carry a firearm shall be made considering this expectation weighed against the possible consequences of accidental or indiscriminate use of firearms. DoD personnel regularly engaged in law enforcement or security duties shall be armed.

That basically makes Military Installations in the United States giant “Gun Free Zones” where the people who reside therein are denied the right to keep and bear arms in order to protect themselves.  Unlike the general population, the servicemen and women who don’t want to mass murder people are more likely to follow the law.

In a tragic twist of irony, this means that our nations most trained defensive force is left helpless at the hands of a person with malicious intent.

It leaves places like Ft. Hood at the mercy of Ivan Lopez, a Specialist who lived off base.  Lopez came on base, started firing on the disarmed and helpless soldiers he found, killing three and wounding an additional sixteen.

How was he stopped?

Like most cowardly mass shooters, the MOMENT someone armed stood up against him he shot himself.  Unfortunately the unnamed female MP officer didn’t arrive until after Lopez racked up 19 causalities.

Rep. Steve Stockman (R) of Texas summed it up best when he introduced legislation that would allow both service members and federal civilians to carry their personal weapons on military installations after the Navy Yard shooting:

“Our disarmed military bases are vulnerable targets for terrorists, as we saw in Fort Hood and the Navy Yard. Despite that, soldiers trained to use guns cannot carry on base. The result is two mass killings where defenseless soldiers had to watch as their friends were murdered.”

Stockman will continue to be proven a sage until the members of the US Military are no longer disarmed and left like lambs to the slaughter at the hands of madmen.

How many more soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen have to die because of gun control?
