As the old adage goes, when more good people have guns, the more likely they are to stop bad people with guns.
Despite calls from anti-gun politicians and media figures for more gun control legislation in wake of the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Americans are seeking out ways to protect themselves with firearms.
Well-trained, armed citizens who have concealed handgun permits can thwart deadly situations. Below are three reasons why America needs more good guys with guns:
Many of those in law enforcement, in both small towns and in major cities, agree that an armed, trained populace can help curb crime and stop mass shootings. Why? They can help law enforcement stop terrible people from committing heinous acts.
For example, two police chiefs have recently encouraged their constituents to learn responsible firearms use.
Following the terrorist attack in Paris, France, Detroit Police Chief James Craig offered support for more armed citizens by saying, “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”
More recently, Ulster County Sheriff Paul J. Van Blarcum of New York authored a Facebook note encouraging all handgun permit holders to carry. He wrote:
I urge you to responsibly take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm. To ensure the safety of yourself and others, make sure you are comfortable and proficient with your weapon, and knowledgeable of the laws in New York State with regards to carrying a weapon and when it is legal to use it.
Much to the dismay of those who disparage gun rights, armed citizens with concealed handgun permits have already thwarted mass shootings.
In May 2015, two ISIS sympathizers who targeted a free speech event in Garland, Texas were shot dead by police officers.
In March 2012, a churchgoer with a concealed handgun permit prevented a mass shooting at a South Carolina church.
And in April 2015, an Uber driver with a concealed handgun permit shot a gunman who opened fire in Chicago.
Countless other examples exist but fail to get reported on. It’s important to note these instances.
Despite the alarmist rhetoric suggesting our country is more dangerous than ever, homicide rates are at an all-time low. What explains this? Why, the presence of more armed citizens!
Most people gloss over the fact that homicide rates have declined, particularly from 1993-2013, as the number of privately owned firearms has increased. The presence of more guns in the hands of good people has and will continue to reduce crime.
Before thinking about purchasing a firearm and going through the necessary training, ask yourself this: are you equipped to handle a firearm? Do you know the responsibilities that come with using one? Are you potentially prepared to use it in a life or death situation?
If yes, get ready to empower yourself. To see if your state allows concealed carry, go here.
