The rise of female hunters in America is worth celebrating. Since more women discover the outdoors and shooting sports industry, it’s worth noting this and embracing the trend–as blogs like Huntress View are doing.
If you haven’t familiarized yourself with Huntress View, then you should. Founder Andrea Haas explains the inspiration behind the concept:
Huntress View is a place where women hunters, whether they be experienced or beginners, can go to gain insight on hunting and shooting from a woman’s point of view. I know women have a different outlook on things than men and hunting is no exception. After introducing some of my friends to hunting they told me they were glad that they learned about it from another woman rather than from a man. With this concept in mind I created Huntress View in October of 2013.
Andrea was kind enough to allow us to interview her about her efforts with Huntress View. Below is our exclusive interview!
Tell our readers more about Huntress View. What’s is your goal? How does it depart from other female-centered hunting outlets?
“Huntress View is a blog that I started in 2013 as a way to share my hunting experiences with other women. My main goal is to reach women who are thinking about going hunting for the first time and give them some insight on what they should expect, but from a woman’s point of view. Hopefully this will inspire them to give hunting a try. Most likely they will be introduced to hunting by a male, either their father or significant other, and that’s ok. But I have been told by several of my friends that I took hunting for the first time that they were glad that they could learn about it from a woman instead because we were easier to relate to. We hope for those that prefer to learn from women will take a look at the articles on our blog and ask us questions through email or social media. We would be glad to help!”
“I feel that we are different because we focus on educating other women by sharing what we have learned from our own personal hunting experiences. We are made up of about 16 team members, each of us with varying experience levels, so we are able to relate to a wider audience of women hunters other than those who are just new to it.”
Eva Shockey recently said in an interview that hunting is very trendy. Do you agree with her statement about hunting being very trendy today?
“I do, but I feel that it’s more specifically a trend for women since there has been such an increase in women hunters over recent years. According to the N.S.S.F. there has been an 85% increase in women hunters from 2001 to 2013. And there’s no denying that most recent “The Hunger Games” movies have made more girls want to take up archery and hunting!”

The rise of new hunters, especially female hunters, is quite noteworthy. Does the industry do an adequate job of attracting new people? What part will Huntress View play in attracting new huntresses?
“Yes, I think that it does. More and more companies are taking note of this and coming out with hunting gear and apparel designed specifically for women. Having camo, bows and guns that actually fit us may be what actually encourages some women to give hunting a try in the first place.”
“I also see a lot of companies and organizations making efforts and starting campaigns that encourage introducing the next generation to hunting, Student Outdoor Experience (SOE) being one of them. SOE is a not-for-profit organization that educates and empowers the next generation to lead the way in preserving our heritage and sport. They are involved in schools and churches across the country, teaching students lessons related to leadership and comprehensive hunting, shooting and practical how-tos.”
“As far as Huntress View, we love introducing our friends to hunting & shooting and will take them with us any chance we get. We run campaigns through our social media often encouraging others to introduce someone new to the outdoors. This fall we did one called #GetThemOutdoors where we encouraged our followers to introduce a female to hunting this season and share their experience with us. In exchange we picked one of our contest entries and sent them both some women’s hunting products to use throughout the season. I think that we are showing other women that we are just as capable of being successful at hunting as a man is and that we truly enjoy hunting, so I hope that will at least get more women interested in giving it a try! I really believe that if I can do it, anyone can.”
W.C. Fields once opined, “Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard on a cold night, she can still survive.”
It’s wonderful to see blogs like Huntress View come about to promote hunting by and for women. People like Andreas Haas can only help the sport of hunting and its future.
